The Amazon Kindle, designed and marketed by, is a series of e-book readers. Amazon Kindle devices allow the users to download, shop, browse and read e-books, magazines, newspapers, blogs and other digital media through wireless networking. The hardware platform was developed by subsidiary Lab126, started as single devices and now contains a wide range of devices including Android-based tablets with color LCD screen and enthusiastic readers with E Ink electronic paper displays. Kindle Applications

Amazon introduced a ‘Kindle for PC’ app in late 2009 which is available as a free download for users of Microsoft Windows8, 7 XP and Vista. This application provides you with a wide range of book to read on your personal computer in color without any requirement of Kindle unit. The company, in the early 2010, introduced a version for the AppleMacintosh. Later in June 2010, the company released a version designed for Android phones with the name ‘Kindle for Android’. The versions for the Apple iPhone, iPad, Blackberry cellphones and Windows and Mac computers were later introduced through the help of Google Android application. In January 2011, the company introduced Kindle for users of Windows Phone 7. Later in the next month, they also released an HTML5 based web app supporting Firefox, Chrome and Safari browsers known as Kindle Cloud Reader.  In 2013, the company did not show any interest in introducing separate applications for GNU/Linux operating systems so the same Cloud reader is used in Linus using the browser.

Samsung, on 17 April 2014, announced that it would discontinue its eBook store and effectively partner with Amazon for the Kindle app for Samsung users which will allow users of Samsung Galaxy using Android 4.0 or higher can add free book service, book deals allowing the users to choose any eBook every month with the range of books that is provided to them by Amazon.


Operating system updates that are notified are automatically installed in you phones when it is in sleep mode having Wi-Fi connected to it. Kindles can be charged by either using your computer’s USB port or an AC adapter. It also consists of experimental features including a basic web browser. Users can enjoy MP3 music while reading if their device supports MP3 playback.

  • File formats

Kindles do not support EPUB file format that is used by many e-book readers. These devices are designed to use Amazon’s e-book format.

  • Proprietary formats (AZW, KF8)

Kindle devices use the AZW e-book format, similar to the Mobipocket (MOBI) format of files that are not DRM-restricted.

  • Format support by device

Kindles can only read plain text files (TXT), unprotected Mobipocket files (MOBI, PRC), Amazon’s AZW format and Topaz format books (TPZ).

  • Email conversion

The Amazon Company provides an email-based service converting PNG, GIF and BMP graphics to AZW. They will also convert Microsoft Word (DOC or DOCX) documents and HTML pages through the same email-based mechanism sending a Kindle-formatted file to your device through 3G for $0.15 per MB or via Wi-Fi for free.

  • Textbook rentals

On July 2011, The Amazon Company started a program allowing college students to rent boos from Kindle textbooks from different publishers for some specific time.
